Tips to Keep Your House Warm This Winter

Attics can be one of the biggest culprits when it comes to heat loss in your house. If you aren't already aware, heat rises, so if that space is not insulated well (or at all), the heat in your home is more than likely escaping through your attic area. The cost to heat your home can be expensive, and while we live in a cold climate for nearly half the year, that cost is unavoidable. So, the last thing you want is to feel like you are just throwing your money away.

Here are some quick tips on ways that you can ensure your home is better insulated, in turn saving you on heating costs this winter:

Identify areas in need of insulation

Head up to your attic and begin by identifying any areas where an extra layer of insulation could be added or maybe insulation is lacking within the space all together. The simplest way to insulate your attic is by adding material to the floor, as it’s directly connected to your living area below.

Batts of insulation are the most purchased due to their flexibility and ability to fit between attic joists and studs. Another insulation type is Loose Fill, which works great in attics that have irregular joist spacing or a lot of obstructions to work around. Both types have their benefits depending upon the layout and structure of your attic space. At the end of the day, it is important that you choose an insulation that is rated for your attic space and will reduce the loss of warm air from your living area.

Seal any air leaks

The biggest culprit of air leaks is through the attic windows. We recommend using a canned spray foam that is made specifically for windows or doors. Spray this around the cashing and it will create a seal that blocks out that cold winter air flow.

Fix roof leaks

Water is not a friend to insulation. If your home currently experiences roof leaks, we recommend contacting NH Grand Roofs to have this replaced before winter hits. Not only will the water create mold and mildew, but it also ruins the air-trapping technology that blocks heat flow within insulation. When inspecting your attic’s insulation, check for water stains, damp spots, or mold on the attic joists.

Are you noticing considerable air or water leaks? It may be time to replace your existing roof. Connect with the professionals at NH Grand Roofs to learn more and receive a free estimate.
