The Layers of Your Roof
Roof systems are more complex than you might think. Each component has their own job to do; to work together as a team for maximum protection from harsh weather elements. The way each product is applied in a roofing system also affects how long it will last and how easily it can be maintained.
First Up: Underlayment
By applying an underlayment, it serves as a protective layer that sits beneath the shingles on your roof. It will help protect against moisture and provides an added layer of cold protection. And because they are water resistant, the underlayment on your roof will help in preventing leaks from ice dams and wind-driven rain.
A roof is an investment. This is the first step in ensuring it lasts for many years to come!
The Main Event: Asphalt Roofing Shingles
There are a large variety of colors and styles available when selecting your shingles. NH Grand Roofs prefers to use high-quality asphalt shingles that we know will withstand New Hampshire weather, no matter the season.
Three of the most commonly used shingles for residential roofing include:
Strip Shingles: A basic residential roofing shingle that features a single layered shingle and is typically designed to look like slate.
Dimensional Shingles: These roofing shingles are a heavier weight than strip roofing shingles and are manufactured as a dual-layered or multi-layered product. Dimensional roofing shingles are most used by NH Grand Roofs.
Premium Shingles: Premium roofing shingles provide enhanced aesthetic and an increased design element. They are also typically laminated.
Finally: Finishing Products
Ridge Vents: Proper ventilation is necessary to keep your roof (and home) healthy. When a ridge vent is installed, it will allow for a continuous flow of outside air through the attic. This creates cooler attics in the summer and drier attics in the winter.
Hip and Ridge Caps: These accessory shingles are what our team uses to give a polished look to any hips or ridges on your roof. Providing a nice, clean finish.
