Roof Damage After Strong Winds

Your roof is an important part of your home, especially where the interior of your house is concerned. You wake up every day, go to sleep every night, and trust that your roof will protect everyone inside from rain, wind, snow, and scorching heat. However, unexpected damage can happen to anyone. Your roof may sustain damage due to storms or high winds. And once that damage is done, it’s important to know how to properly handle roof damage and what to do next.

After a storm

Never go outside in the middle of a storm to inspect for damage, as this could lead to serious injury. Following a large storm or heavy winds, you may notice a lot of debris in your yard. Start by checking your roof for any immediate or visible signs of damage. If you can do so safely, be sure to remove any tree branches that may have fallen on or around your roof. Should there be any downed or exposed wires, let your utility company know so that they can safely remove and repair those lines. Do not put yourself in a position where you come in contact with those exposed wires.

The more noticeable signs of damage

Before filing a claim with your homeowner’s insurance, here are some of the more noticeable signs of damage that you may find while inspecting your home for damage:

·         Missing or lifting shingles

·         A leaky roof

·         Gutter damage (loosened, dented, or fallen off)

·         Cracked or separated flashing

It is important that you document any damage that you find by taking photos.
