How to Protect Your Roof from Extreme Winds

Living in New Hampshire, you are pretty much guaranteed a winter filled with heavy winds. And with those heavy winds comes the potential for damage. But protecting your roof from wind damage is not always an easy task. Which is why we have put together some steps you can take to protect your roof.

Remove Trees & Trim Branches

Across the state many of us are living in heavily wooded areas. Although beautiful and great for curb appeal, those trees near your roof can become a risk if they are not maintained properly.

Look at the trees around your house. Are there any branches that appear to be hanging above or near your roof? Do any nearby trees appear to be dead or leaning towards your home? If you answered yes, trim what you can and call in a professional tree removal company to take care of what you cannot.

Fallen branches and trees can damage and expose your roof, gutters, and vents if they fall.

Inspect Your Roof

Even when you are not expecting high winds, it is important to inspect your roof at least 2-3 times throughout the year.

Throughout the exterior of your home, check for anything that may be loose or damaged on your roof. If there is any debris or fallen branches, be sure to remove those from the roof. And clear and blocked gutters or downspouts to avoid water build-up.

If you notice anything of concern during your inspection, contact the NH Grand Roofs team.

Secure Loose Shingles

As are inspecting your roof, you may find some loose shingles if the roof is older. These loose shingles can be blown from your roof in a high wind situation. If you can reach those shingles safely, nail them down using at least 4-6 nails. It will secure the shingle for the time being until you are able to have a professional take a closer look.

If you are finding that there is more than one or two loose shingles, it is time to call in a professional to perform a more thorough inspection. Based on the age and condition of your roof, they can determine if a roof replacement is necessary. Connect with the team at NH Grand Roofs to learn more.
