How do I get rid of Black Streaks on my roof?

Have you noticed dark streaks on your roof? Are you wondering how you can get rid of them? The good news is those black streaks on your shingles are common and can be easy to clean. Here are some ways that you can remove them.

What is it?

Those dark streaks that you find discoloring your shingles are a type of algae. Algae in general thrives in areas where there is moisture. Which means you will typically find it on the part of your roof that faces North, as that is the side of the house that tends to see the least amount of direct sunlight.

Algae (fortunately) does not affect how your shingles protect your roof. The good news is that even though they may look bad, the algae is not something that would cause damage to your shingles.

What do I do?

We know it can be a bit of an eye sore, but do not worry, there are ways that you can remove the algae yourself! We recommend using a pump sprayer filled with one part bleach and two parts water. Using your sprayer, wet the impacted area of your roof. Keep in mind that any bushes, plants, or flowers at ground level may affected. Spray them with fresh water before and after you treat your shingles.

If you are not comfortable going up onto your roof (because let’s be honest – some are pretty high off the ground), there are local professionals that you can call to remove the algae for you.

When the time comes for a new roof, if your shingles are prone to algae, we recommend that you consider a shingle with algae-resistant granules, such as CertainTeed’s shingles with StreakFighter ® Algae-Resistant Technology.
